How wheel chocks work

How wheel chocks work

A wheel chock is a wedge that sits against a tire. It gives the wheel something to push against so a parked vehicle or trailer is less likely to roll.

Here is how to use one properly.

Placement

Place the chock snug against the tire on the downhill side, so the wheel would roll into it.

Push it in firmly.

Use a pair

Chocks come in pairs for a reason. Use one on each side of a wheel, or on two wheels, as your work or trailer manual says.

Our Rubber Wheel Chock Pair is sold as a pair with a rope handle.

Match the tire

A chock should suit the size of the tire. Our page lists medium at about 8 x 6 x 4 in and large at about 10 x 8 x 6 in.

Check that the size suits your tires.

Know your rules

Different workplaces have their own chocking rules.

This gear does not replace any equipment, training or paperwork your work or local rules require.

Before and after use

Before you place a chock, check that the ground is clear of loose gravel, ice and mud, and wipe the chock if it is dirty. After use, pull the chock out by its rope handle and wipe it with a damp cloth.

The pair costs $39 and comes in medium or large. Store both chocks together so you always have a pair. Browse our vehicle and trailer gear to see the rest of the range, and read your trailer manual for the rules that apply to you.

Questions and answers

Where does the rope handle help?

It lets you pull a chock out from under a wheel without bending right down.

Can one chock be enough?

Follow your trailer or work instructions. We sell the chocks as a pair.
